Angelique Kidjo [Mar. 26th, 2009|11:55 pm]
Crazy night! I went out with Christine to see Angelique Kidjo in concert at USC. We stopped in Chinatown for dinner at Hong Kong BBQ (yum!), but accidentally parked in a tow zone for the specific hours we were there! Gahhh!! The car got towed. We decided after figuring out where it was to go to USC anyways. We Taxid and ran through campus to Bovard Auditorium. Once there we explained our predicament and the ticketpeople gave us free tickets. We sat near the front! I was feet away from Angelique Kidjo, an emmy winning artist! She was AMAZING, and managed to get the crowd on its feet for most of the show. She even danced through the crowd and got us young people (and especially little kids!) on stage and dancing for her last two songs. It was easily the best show I've even seen. Angelique's words and message were powerful too: even as meltdown looms, we must stay positive and remember that each of us matters to the world, no matter our position or background. I'll remember this night forever.

I live... [Mar. 12th, 2009|03:10 pm]
I don't ever update this thing. I'm on break, loving being home. I saw an amazing Pendulum concert two nights ago with Ana and Alex. It wiped me out though! I was down for the count yesterday! Today I'm feeling better though and did some baking projects with mom. Also, I'm rereading the "Young Wizards" series and loving every bit of it. So classic =). The break feels very short though... Tonight though I'm doing a manga review and relaxing. And tomorrow... Watchmen and Birthday celebrations! Yay!

[music |The Tempest - Pendulum]

I just finished one of the most amazing comics (or stories period) I've ever read. Even 15 minutes after finishing Banana Fish (yes, like the J.D. Salinger short story), I'm still crying my eyes out. For this, I'm going to list the 5 most moving comics I've ever read in no particular order.

1. Banana Fish, by Akimi Yoshida

2. Nana, by Ai Yazawa

3. Love and Rockets, by Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez

4. Buddha, by Osamu Tezuka

5.  Basara, by Yumi Tamura

Semi-emo rant [Mar. 3rd, 2008|03:53 am]

[mood | depressed]
[music |Why - Annie Lennox]

What am I doing? Seriously? Every school I go to I change my tune. I try to fix what I screwed up the last time around. And what did I learn from High School? That I need to take care of myself. That I can't invest all of my well being in others. That giving constantly is a recipe for disaster. And I'm falling back into it. It's so easy. SO easy! I mother people. But now the effects are getting ridiculous. I spent upwards of ten hours mothering 5 different people this weekend. What the hell? What am I thinking?! I've got 3 midterms this week! Am I psycho? Honestly, I need to back the hell off. I love the people I'm mothering, but I need to tone it down. I'm getting crazy and depressed. And to turn it around I need to interact with more people. I feel myself separating, and I don't like it.
What am I talking about? Jesus. I want to do something with my life for once. Really. I'm going insane, falling behind in school, and getting sadder and sadder. Why is it the more I give the hollower  I feel? This is getting ridiculous. Something has got to give and I don't know what. Time will tell I guess.

CA Primaries [Feb. 6th, 2008|11:41 am]

[mood | irritated]
[music |"New Jack" - Justice]

I am irked on multiple accounts by the CA elections. First, I'm sad that Obama lost. That's way up there. But secondly, all the ballot measures went the OPPOSITE way that I wanted them too. All of them except Prop. 91.

Prop.91 was something I voted NO on because if you read the voter guide, it says that the Prop. no longer matters and EVERYONE should vote no. A YES vote on the proposition does nothing besides create an irritating piece of useless legislature. Anybody who even glanced through the official election guide would have voted no on Prop 91. For the guide section on Prop. 91 click here: http://voterguide.sos.ca.gov/argu_rebut/argu_rebutt91.html.

To quote the guide:

PROP
91

TRANSPORTATION FUNDS.
INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT.

ARGUMENT IN FAVOR OF
PROPOSITION 91
ARGUMENT AGAINST
PROPOSITION 91

VOTE NO ON PROPOSITION 91. IT'S NO LONGER NEEDED.

As the official proponents of this measure, we are encouraging you to VOTE NO ON PROPOSITION 91.

In 2006, our coalition qualified this measure for the ballot as a means of stopping the Governor and Legislature from taking the state sales tax on gasoline, which is supposed to be used on transportation projects, and using those funds for non-transportation purposes.

As this initiative was being qualified, Governor Schwarzenegger and a bipartisan group of legislators put a different constitutional measure on the November 2006 ballot that also accomplished what Proposition 91 set out to do. That measure, Proposition 1A, was approved by an overwhelming 77% of California voters in November 2006.

Passage of Prop. 1A means that state politicians in Sacramento can no longer take our gas tax dollars and use those funds for non-transportation purposes.

Because Prop. 1A is now law, hundreds of millions of dollars in existing gasoline sales taxes are being sent each year to local communities for projects to relieve traffic congestion, improve safety, and fund mass transit.

By passing Proposition 1A, voters solved the problem of state raids of our gas tax funds.

Proposition 91 is no longer needed.

We respectfully urge you to vote NO ON PROPOSITION 91.

MARK WATTS, Executive Director
Transportation California

JIM EARP, Executive Director
California Alliance for Jobs

No argument against Proposition 91
was submitted.

Interesting. So nobody would have voted for it, right? And if a lot of people did, it shows they didn't even bother to educate themselves really basically about the election, right? Well, 2,715,390 People voted YES on it. That's 41.9% of the voters. Did 41.9% of the voters not even LOOK at the guide? They send this guide to EVERYBODY. Every independent guide says the same thing as well, as does every internet site. I dare you to find a site endorsing a YES vote on Prop. 91. So what made them vote this way? Random choice because they didn't care about the props? Decided at the polls? Just couldn't be bothered to do any research/discussion about the props AT ALL? And I'm sure plenty who voted NO did it without the guide too. It's good to know that my intensively researched vote was nullified handily by 41.9% of the non-critically thinking voting population. Great.

Activity - Shuffle it up! [Feb. 3rd, 2008|09:02 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Location |Braun Study Room]
[music |Awaken - Rebecca Riots]

One of my friends here at Oxy, Jacob, mentioned a cool little activity. Rather than listing your favorite bands, simply shuffle your songs in your media player, ipod or whatnot, and list the first five songs you get. I'm going to do that here and say a little about them:

1.  Bright Fire - Fleetwood Mac: Fleetwood Mac are a wonderful band introduced to me by my parents. It wasn't until high school though that I really started to like them. Based off my friend Claire's recommendations, I decided to give them another whack. I adore them now. This particular song is on their lesser known "Penguin" album, which is much more laid-back and melodious than their later work.

2. Silver Fox [RJD2] - Company Flow, Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock: This is a neat remix that combines several hip-hop and rap artists I like. Surprisingly devoid of vocals.

3. Happiness is a Warm Gun - The Beatles: Who doesn't love The Beatles? OK, there are some, but they're strange. Stereotypically, I got really into them as a young teen, around the age of fourteen. They are one of the first bands I ever got really into. They are still my absolute favorite classic rock band. This particular song has a lot of sad irony going for it. RIP.

4. Reasons - Earth, Wind & Fire: This awesome band was introduced to me by my good buddy Raphael. A large chink of my music library is thanks to him, so a huge shout-out. This particular song is really melodious and less funky than there usual fare. They played recently at the Noble Peace Prize Ceremony along with another favorite artist of mine, Annie Lennox.

5. Track 03 - DJ Nero: Ah, High School, good times. This a mix by Oren, who I'm delighted to say I went high school with because if he ever decides to go pro... Hot damn! This track is from his hour long dance set for our hour-long spring 2007 dance set. This was probably some of my first exposure to house, electronica and dance music, which are some of my favorite genres today. Huge shout out Oren! Or should I say DJ Nero? This particular track mixes "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger", by Daft Punk, "Night on Fire" by VHS or Beta, and "Able to Love" by Benny Benassi.

Try it yourself!

Get Out There and VOTE!!! [Feb. 3rd, 2008|02:45 pm]
[Tags|]
[music |Genesis - Justice]

I'm so sick of having to pick between two moderates in the democratic primaries. Sadly, my Dennis Kucinich swag arrived in the mail yesterday. I was working for his campaign. He was excluded from all the debates by the corporate media that doesn't want his perspective exposed.

Often called the conscience of the Democratic Party, Kucinich believes in Single-Payer universal health care, an immediate withdrawal from Iraq, and end to war, gay marriage, a completely revised set of federal programs to end all kinds of discrimination, a Department of Peace, massive foreign and local aid to end poverty, repealing the Bush tax cuts and raising the rates to reasonable levels for corporations and the upper class, ending the Patriot Act, instituting progressive border reform, moving to 100% sustainable energy, ending the war on drugs, ending the death penalty, ending the pharmaceutical companies grip on our drugs, providing massive funding towards AIDS research, ending torture, etc.

All of his views are viewable at http://www.dennis4president.com/go/issues/ . He has been since forced to leave the presidential primary because the media refused to cover him, including supposedly progressive groups like the Congressional Black Congress. They invited him by default to debates as the fourth place contender, realized he wasn't moderate like Bill Richardson, and subsequently went to court to exclude him. Now the traitorous and corporate Democratic Party is trying to remove him from his seat in congress. In polls of progressives, Dennis nearly always wins. And frankly, I didn't want to vote for someone in the primaries who doesn't believe in my human rights. If I'd known the primaries would come down to this, I'd have considered registering Green. Their front-runner, Cynthia McKinney is an amazing woman who'd effect massive and positive change as president.

But, as a registered Democrat, I held my nose and voted for Obama. It's unreasonable to compare him or Hillary to psychos like the Republicans. At least these two believe in civil unions, which is a good first step. Republicans believe in a constitutional amendment against us. And at least they'll get us out of Iraq, and are way less likely to make a mess out of Iran. And on the environment, the Democrats and Republicans are incredibly disparate. Until we can stop the Republicans, social justice, gay rights, and peace are all pipe dreams.

My California Primary Endorsements [Feb. 1st, 2008|02:01 pm]
[Tags|]

My Endorsements - GO VOTE ON TUESDAY!!!

Presidential Nominee

Democratic Candidate: Barack Obama. The candidates I prefer have dropped out. If you can't bear Obama, consider a protest vote for Kucinich, who has left the race but is an amazing progressive.

Republican Candidate: None

Green Candidate: Cynthia McKinney

California Propositions

Prop. 91 - Transportation Funds: NO. This proposition is made irrelevant by last vote's Prop 1A.

Prop. 92 - Community College Tuition: YES. This proposition will help make community college affordable by all.

Prop. 93 - Term Limits: YES, WITH RESERVATIONS. Good for CA in the long run, but will keep Perata and NuNez, two crappy and power-hungry senators in office for six more years.

Props 94-97 - Indian Gaming Casinos - NO, WITH RESERVATIONS. Though the native americans deserve a break this is not the way forward. The casinos do not have to obey environmental standards, american taxpayers will lose money and the smaller tribes will be cheated.

Oakland Propositions

NO ON ALL EXCEPT G. These are ill-thought-out, though many of them are for good causes. G on the other hand is VITAL. It is  NOT a tax hike, but instead will maintain taxes at their current level in order to maintain school funding.

First they came for Kucinich... [Jan. 27th, 2008|03:22 pm]
[Tags|]

http://www.countercurrents.org/rose270108.htm

It's a slippery slope for America. If first we're silent when the corporations exclude Kucinich, we will be silent at the next offen se too. They think they can get away with so much. We MUST remember the past.
They came first for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time no one was left to speak up.
We're starting this poem over in American politics, and the first stanza is "They came first for Kucinich...". Regardless of our political affiliation we CANNOT stand on the sidelines watching our democracy be co-opted. The time to speak up is now!

Kucinich withdraws from Presidential race 01 25 08 [Jan. 26th, 2008|05:15 pm]

Thank you so much for everything Dennis, you've been so screwed. Please watch Dennis' video above. He is the hope for our country.

Dennis Kucinich, who polled at a constant 4% among democrats was excluded from all the state debates despite having the same numbers as Giulani, who was always included. The companies who invited him and then excluded him later were forced to do so because their criteria resulted in their debates including Kucinich after Richardson dropped out. If Richardson had stayed in the race, the stations' criteria would NOT have changed to exclude Richardson. They only did it because Kucinich would shut down big media's grasp on America. GE, who owns NBC, makes tons of weapons and vehicles for the war. Kucinich is the only democrat who would pull out of Iraq immediately. They arbitrarily exclude him, even appealing his lawsuit to be included to the Nevada supreme court. Even the Congressional Black Caucus who support all of his policies excluded him from their debate and lined up behind the all too similar Hilary and Obama.

http://www.blackagendareport.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=500&Itemid=1

We have to keep fighting. End Big Business' control of our elections. Though in November we may be forced to vote for someone as distasteful as Obama or Hilary, the future of progressivism is not dead. One step at a time, until we can bring America out of the dark ages. Kucinich for President 2012!
