BEST surprise ever at the Grammys this year! Yay! At this point though, Daft Punk deserves so much more recognition than Kanye (no offense). Still awesome to see them get so much love though! Sweet!

Activity - Shuffle it up! [Feb. 3rd, 2008|09:02 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Location |Braun Study Room]
[music |Awaken - Rebecca Riots]

One of my friends here at Oxy, Jacob, mentioned a cool little activity. Rather than listing your favorite bands, simply shuffle your songs in your media player, ipod or whatnot, and list the first five songs you get. I'm going to do that here and say a little about them:

1.  Bright Fire - Fleetwood Mac: Fleetwood Mac are a wonderful band introduced to me by my parents. It wasn't until high school though that I really started to like them. Based off my friend Claire's recommendations, I decided to give them another whack. I adore them now. This particular song is on their lesser known "Penguin" album, which is much more laid-back and melodious than their later work.

2. Silver Fox [RJD2] - Company Flow, Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock: This is a neat remix that combines several hip-hop and rap artists I like. Surprisingly devoid of vocals.

3. Happiness is a Warm Gun - The Beatles: Who doesn't love The Beatles? OK, there are some, but they're strange. Stereotypically, I got really into them as a young teen, around the age of fourteen. They are one of the first bands I ever got really into. They are still my absolute favorite classic rock band. This particular song has a lot of sad irony going for it. RIP.

4. Reasons - Earth, Wind & Fire: This awesome band was introduced to me by my good buddy Raphael. A large chink of my music library is thanks to him, so a huge shout-out. This particular song is really melodious and less funky than there usual fare. They played recently at the Noble Peace Prize Ceremony along with another favorite artist of mine, Annie Lennox.

5. Track 03 - DJ Nero: Ah, High School, good times. This a mix by Oren, who I'm delighted to say I went high school with because if he ever decides to go pro... Hot damn! This track is from his hour long dance set for our hour-long spring 2007 dance set. This was probably some of my first exposure to house, electronica and dance music, which are some of my favorite genres today. Huge shout out Oren! Or should I say DJ Nero? This particular track mixes "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger", by Daft Punk, "Night on Fire" by VHS or Beta, and "Able to Love" by Benny Benassi.

Try it yourself!

[music |The concert is playing in my head]

Yeah, this is why I've been obsessed with Annie Lennox recently. I JUST saw her in concert! Eeeeeeeeeeeeek!!!! She was ridiculously amazing, and all her songs sounded off the charts great. Here was the lineup:

1. No More I Love You's (Only song from Medusa. Made me cry like a baby)
2. Little Bird
3. Broken Glass
4. Pavement Cracks (WOW...)
5. Dark Road
6. Smithereens

Annie solo at piano:
7. Here Comes The Rain
8. A Thousand Beautiful Things
9. Sisters are Doin' It For Themselves (Sing it!)
    (with back up vocalists)

with band:
10. Cold
11. There Must Be an Angel
      (playing with my heart)
12. Ghost in My Machine (Yay!!!)
13. When Tomorrow Comes
14. Thorn In My Side ( I now really like this song!)
15. Sweet Dreams (are made of this) (Always fantastic)

Encore (after Sing documentary):
16. Sing (I didn't think that she'd do it live. GREAT!)
17. Why (Fitting end. Powerful.)

My absolute favorites were No More I Love You's, Sing, Pavement Cracks, and obviously Sweet Dreams (are made of this). This concert rocked SO much. I'm jittery =). And have three mid-terms tomorrow. Yay!

Annie Lennox - Loneliness [Oct. 8th, 2007|10:47 am]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Location |Braun Computer Lab]
[mood |Unsure]
[music |The Saddest Song I've Got - Annie Lennox]

I get to see her on thursday! Yay!!!!!!!

"Loneliness"

Loneliness
Is a place that I know well
It's the distance between us
And the space inside ourselves
And emptiness....
Is the chattering in your head
It's the call of the living
And the race from life to death
Woa and I know
Yes and I know
What you feel...

And I've got a longin'
That's hard to find
Won't give me no peace of mind
Something that I've lived with all along
Days and weeks and months and years
Filling in the time my dear
Tryin' to find the place where I belong

Hopelessness
is the darkness in your heart
It's the sound of one hand clapping
While it's pulling you apart
Woa and I know
Yes and I know
What you feel

And
I've got a longin'
That's hard to find
Won't give me no peace of mind
Something that I've lived with all along
Days and weeks and months and years
Filling in the time my dear
Tryin' to find the place where I belong

And
I got a hunger that's
Hard to fill
Driving me on overkill
Tellin' me that everything's gone wrong
Got me a need
That I can't break
More than I can hardly take
Somehow I still keep on going strong

When I call your name
I'm gonna scream out loud
I'll say...
"here I am standing in the crowd"
You'll say "come to me"
With your open mind
you never know
What you still might find"
But you keep me here
Like a cancelled flight
An empty train
Running through the night
An orphan child
A broken shoe
and I'm still down here
Looki' out for you
Are you there for me?
'Cause I'm here for you

Honestly - Annie Lennox [Oct. 7th, 2007|11:17 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Location |La biblioteca]
[music |People Rockin' - Joey Mazzola]

I'm mad, sad and a little wistful. Annie always has me covered =).

Honestly

The beauty that you gave
Has turned upon itself
And all the things you said
Evaporated
Evaporated ...
Was I blind
Deaf and dumb
To the words slipped from your tongue?

Honestly ... honestly ... honestly
Alone in my bed
The things that you said
Go round in my head ... still
It seems to be true
That nothin' I do
Can influence you ...

I tried and tried again
(Don't you know I tried and tried again
to make you listen to me
But everything I said it always seemed to go right through you)
To make you notice me
(I turned myself into a person that I didn't like
But please believe me when I say I know it wasn't right)
But talking to myself
(I never thought that things would
get to be so complicated
I never thought that you and me would end up So frustrated)
Won't catch you attention I see ...
(You'd think that something had to come from all those good intentions
But in the end I needed something more than intervention)

Was I mad?
Was I ... mad?
Foolish me
Foolish ... me
To succumb so easily
To suc...cumb
Easi...ly
So easily
So easily

Honestly... honestly... honestly...
(Alone in my bed
The things that you said
Go round in my head ... still
It seems to be true
That nothin' I do
Can influence you... still)

Fools like me get so easily taken
And fools like me can be so mistaken

Honestly... Honestly... Honestly

The promise that you gave
(Don't you know the promise that you
gave just turned it's back upon me
I stopped believing but you couldn't take the whole thing from me)
Has turned it's back
(I never thought I'd have to pay the price to set you free)
And all you represented
Was just my projection you see...
(You know I never thought I'd ever
live a day without you
And that's the reason why
it makes me sad to think about you
and you know I never thought
I'd make it if you wasn't there
And now I'm tryin' to eject myself
from this despair)

People come
People go...
Never say "I told you so"
Honestly
(I told you so
I told you so)

Everything I know you said
Goin' round inside my head

Never thought I'd see the day
Always got a price to pay

Nothin' that I ever do
Ever seems to get to you

Scratch that. THAT'S why it didn't affect me. I said when I heard, "it won't last two days". Guess what? I was right! Or maybe nothing has changed but their official status. Disgusting.

Also I got a new delightfully cheap cd from Amazon. It's a maxi-single, and not as good as I'd hoped, but it was still worth the five bucks. Tomorrow's Cartoon! Yay!

Awesome weekend, soul searching [Feb. 26th, 2007|12:02 am]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Location |Unknown at the present time]
[mood | melancholy]
[music |Adouma - Angelique Kidjo]

My weekend has been pretty good. Even though the headphone jack on my iPod gave up the ghost, I've been having crazy AV fun. Saturday night I went to see Pedro Almodovar's new movie Volver in Berkeley. It rocked! And then being midnight, and being lucky, my dad and I theater hopped and saw the midnight movie showing of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. On the big screen. SO awesome! Then on Sunday I went to see Rebecca Riots, an awesome local folk band at the Kehilla Synagogue in Oakland. IT was so much fun. I've known one of the women since I was a wee lad in her music class.

My weekend has also been kind of weird. I fortunately recovered from my disgusting emo-ness via tons of sleep. Unfortunately, sleep also lets me think about lots of things. Including death. I've been pondering my own mortality all weekend. What the hell. I guess I'm not very enlightened, but the idea of being gone forever scares the crap out of me. I dunno.

On a lighter note I've decided some battles just aren't worth fighting. I wish all those I've parted ways with the absolute best and hope they can find happiness, safety and peace. Isn't that magnanimous and conceited? Regardless, it's true. Even if they've wronged me at some point (though most haven't. Much), I wish them nothing but the best. I hate holding grudges and regrets. It sounds selfish, but in reality nobody needs someone to hate them. I don't mean that I want to get close to everyone again, but at least parting warmth and kindness would be awesome. Well I know I won't get that from some, but whatever.

Also, everyone must come to Friday and Saturday's Maybeck One Acts at the Live Oak Theater in North Berkeley. I'll cry if you don't come. And they'll rock. So I promise you'll enjoy them too. Also, I'm going to set up a new account where I'll post all my manga, manhwa and graphic novel reviews that I'm doing for school. I really want to share them, even though it's really nerdy.

Signing out, goodnight me.

I live. With less angsty poetry. I've stopped writing it. I don't know why I'm not more active with this journal, considering that I really ought to be. Thank you everyone for your love and support despite my strange mood swings. I really appreciate it. My joys in life are friends and manga - and I think the former is far more important for my sanity. Thank you all. Also, 2/3 of Rebecca Riots and Shelley Dotey Next wednesday at the Ashkenaz. Come! Same for ALL the Rebecca Riots at Eve's cd release at the Freight & Salvage June 3 and 4. Again, hugs!

P.S. Screw Chemistry!!!
P.S.S. If I'm ever actually acting emo, show NO mercy and slap some sense into me. Please!

[Tags|, , , ]
[mood |Coming down from epiphany]
[music |No Woman No Cry (live) - Bob Marley]

List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your LiveJournal along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they're listening to.

1.Sukiyaki - Tuck and Patti (One of my favorite songs ever. It always make me cry)

2.Chances - Rebecca Riots (I wish the circumstances in this song were true for me. Also makes me cry every time)

3.I Shot the Sheriff - Bob Marley (Simply one of Marley's best songs ever. A must listen)

4.Love Letter - Bonnie Raitt (This one REALLY strikes a chord with me. And the best lyrics ever - "could come to push, push comes to shove, shove comes to touch and touch will come to love"..."wive's waitin' in the car, in the car with rain out!")

5.Angel From Montgomery - Bonnie Raitt (Prettiest song ever. "Make me an angel, that flies from Montgomery...")

6.No Woman No Cry (live - Bob Marley (So many different styles in one song. Upbeat and mournful at the same time. Marley is brilliant)

7.Sweet Dreams (are made of these) - Eurythmics (Man Annie Lennox rocks. This is probably the only song highly popular since I was in middle school that I've liked. Someone challenge me on this one)

I tag... [info]clarypoo, [info]mystical_hob0, [info]princessisis, [info]mentos5000. [info]contamity, [info]werewolf_soul, and [info]theandrojenn. Love you all!

[music |Sukiyaki - Tuck & Patti]

So, I just got back from Carmel Valley where I was on vacation. I just went with my dad, and the only things we did were what we both wanted. It was awesome! But the downside is that some of the most romantic places on earth aren't quite the same with your father ^^. Oh well. I'm hoping to see you this weekend Alex, maybe even today. And I can't wait to see you on monday Clara! And the schedule for my new semester is perfect. Yes!!!! By the way here's a question: what song(s) can make you cry every time? Mine are Sukiyaki by Tuck & Patti and Chances by Rebecca Riots.

[music |Spicy Marmelade- Gravitation Vocal Collection]

Just discovered Gravitation. So cute. I owe you Aria. A shounen-ai anime about musicians, who actually perform in the anime. W/ real, GOOD, artists doing the artist voices. Does it get better than this? Yes. I could be getting more sleep. Also, check out my new icon ^^. Blah blah blah, userinfo changes. Going to see Taj Mahal tomorrow night. That'll be so cool. God I love jazz. I'm so sleep-deprived ^^. BTW, I also removed my disclaimer entry that I posted a while back. If that kind of thing would offend people, I don't think I'd want to associate with them anyways. Also my color bars are love ^^. I'm always looking for more. Love you all!

Tuck & Patti Concert [Nov. 26th, 2005|10:50 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]

Wow... The Tuck & Patti concert at Yoshi's was the best thing ever. This is not one of those canned "Best ever!" things you get from teenagers after every canned music concert. This is one of another sort: made me cry, made me want to love. They've been together for 26 years. And they still took my breath away. I'm still teary eyed now. Oh wow. "Love is the key, take it from, me show your love". "If seeing is believing then, let the dreaming begin, let the dreaming begin". Gah. I feel sorry for those who did not see it. You'd have loved it Mentos and you too Aria. I thought of you both. Life... Aria, you mean the world to me. Thank you.

[music |Walking on Broken Glass - Annie Lennox]

What's happening all? I'm still envious of Claire's ability to spout out beautiful prose in this medium. Chris too... damn can you rant! And I love it. Anyways, life is crazy. Two tests tomorrow, one in Spanish IV and one my Unit 3 test in Chemistry. Notice I'm doing this instead of studying. Good habit, no? In addition the "lab quiz" (Instead of normal lab you perform two mini-labs on your own and come up with advanced conclusions) which I took, I also bombed. Wahoo! Oh, well. Life's a bitch and then you die. Thanksgiving weekend Tuck & Patti, a kick as folk duo are coming to Yoshi's I'm going Saturday. Regardless of the day, all must go. Here's the link to their schedule. I pray for friendly faces! This weekend I'm going up to oregon to check out two colleges, Lewis & Clark and Reed. I'm a junior. Why do I have to think about colleges! Right now i want to stay at Maybeck forever. Senioritis has not set in yet! Grrrr. At least my school has the whole week off for thanksgiving. But I have to write a paper, do other homework and go to Oregon and back. And why hasn't JosE (accented e, US history teacher) given me any credit for the first semester I took over the summer with him. I was probably the best student in the class of 7 or 8. That met every day. For three weeks. Sigh... I love the man, but seriously... Oh well. And mad props to Lauren for still thinking about me even though I haven't contacted her. I love you! And this is Maybeck's downside ^^. In other notes, Loveless is still God. All must worship on the altar of Yun Kouga. ::Drools::

First: You all had better listen to some Eurythmics. It kicks so much ass. Very fun. Now for our feature presentation: spontaneous poetry.

Draws us in tight,
Remember to go in closer,
Because near is too far,
And together is just right.
